Flavio Bolsonaro finished ahead of President Lula, beating the polls, and his party made large gains in Congress. His father, convicted of plotting a coup, remains under house arrest.

Senator Flavio Bolsonaro finished first in Sunday's presidential vote in Brazil with about 47 percent to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's roughly 45 percent, according to Americas Quarterly and Al Jazeera. Neither reached the 50 percent needed to win outright, so the two will meet in a runoff on October 25. The result beat the pre-election polls, which had Lula ahead. Abstention reached about 21 percent, the highest since 1998, according to Americas Quarterly.

The right did well beyond the top of the ballot. Bolsonaro's Liberal Party is positioned to become the largest party in the lower house and gained Senate seats, with relatives of the Bolsonaro family among the winners, including his stepmother, Michelle Bolsonaro, and his brother Carlos. Brazilian markets rallied after the result.

The family story is part of the race. Flavio's father, former president Jair Bolsonaro, was convicted of plotting a coup after his 2022 defeat and received a 27-year sentence. He remains under house arrest, and Americas Quarterly reports that an amnesty for him is expected to be among Flavio's first priorities if he wins. Analysts disagree on what comes next. Brian Winter of Americas Quarterly called Flavio the favorite absent a late scandal, while another analyst told Al Jazeera that protest votes may have frontloaded his support and could fade by the runoff.

Notice the pattern: this is less a left-versus-right story than a dynasty story. A country that convicted the father is now deciding whether to hand the office to the son.
