Rural Voters Are Split on the Immigration Crackdown, AP-KFF Poll Finds

About a third of rural voters say the administration's immigration policies have helped their community, a third say hurt, and the rest say no effect, even as most call immigrant workers important to the local economy.
Rural voters are nearly evenly divided over whether the Trump administration's immigration crackdown has helped or hurt their communities, according to a new AP-KFF poll of 2,241 registered rural voters conducted August 12 to 24, with a margin of error of about 3 percentage points. Roughly a third said the policies have been good for their community, roughly a third said bad, and about 30 percent said no effect. The survey defines rural by Census tracts in the USDA's rural categories.
The poll also found a contradiction that cuts across party lines. About 70 percent of rural voters called legally present immigrants very or somewhat important to their local economy, and a similar share said the same about temporary and seasonal farm workers. Forty-five percent said immigrants without legal status are at least somewhat important to the local economy. Forty percent of rural voters said the president has gone too far on immigration, compared with 55 percent of U.S. adults overall in a September AP-NORC poll.
The split follows the politics. About 40 percent of rural voters identify as MAGA Republicans, and two-thirds of them said the policies have helped their communities. Half of rural MAGA Republicans said the president has not gone far enough on deportations. The poll measures perception, not outcomes, and it does not say whether enforcement has actually reached the communities that responded.
Notice the pattern: support for a crackdown in the abstract and the value placed on the workers it targets can sit in the same voter at the same time, and the midterms will show which of the two wins.
