THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A CHRISTIAN NATION — PASTOR LORAN LIVINGSTON BREAKS THE SILENCE

Pastor Loran Livingston of Central Church NC stood in his pulpit...
Pastor Loran Livingston of Central Church NC stood in his pulpit and broke the silence that has protected American Christianity for four centuries. "There has never been a Christian nation, and never will be. You don't live in one now," he said, and then he proved it. Godly people built this nation, Livingston acknowledged. Bible preachers. Foundational figures. All true. But then he asked the question that unmakes mythology: If we're a Christian nation, how do we reconcile that claim with the genocide of 20 million Native Americans — still left out and living in poverty? How do we call ourselves Christian while we enshrined slavery in law and theology, convinced ourselves it aligned with Scripture, and then killed 500,000 of our own people in a civil war so that Americans could maintain the legal right to own other human beings as property? The sermon is precise. Not rage — precision. Which makes it harder to dismiss. On the week America celebrates its 250th birthday, the Trump administration is moving in federal court to erase slavery exhibits from national historical sites. Removing images of enslaved people being beaten and shot. Rewriting panels to claim slavery "wasn't that bad." The government is actively whitewashing the record. And Pastor Livingston is saying what the church needs to hear: Stop pretending. You were never what you claimed to be. The nation built on genocide and slavery cannot call itself Christian and mean it. This is what The Crack looks like. The involuntary moment of recognition where the gap between the story you've been told and the reality you can no longer unsee becomes impossible to bridge. American Christianity has lived in that crack for 400 years. Every generation, some voices say it out loud. Every generation, most of the church stays silent. The Prodigal Movement exists because that silence is ending. Because you can't un-see this. Because The Leaving — walking away from the myth, walking away from the institution that blessed the brutality — is the only honest choice left.
