Tidal Draws a Line on AI Music

The streaming platform says fully AI-generated tracks won't earn royalties anymore. The music industry's AI reckoning just got a new front.
Tidal has announced it will stop paying royalties on music that's fully AI-generated, requiring explicit labeling and cutting off monetization for tracks with no human performer or songwriter behind them. It's a different move than the lawsuits playing out elsewhere in the industry — Tidal isn't suing anyone, it's drawing a line at the platform level about what gets paid and what doesn't.
It's worth watching alongside everything else happening in music and AI right now: labels fighting AI generators in court, artists fighting labels over who owns what a model trained on, and now a streamer deciding unilaterally which songs count as "real" enough to pay out on. Different fight, same underlying question — who gets paid when a machine does part of the work.
