A drone struck the Northern Bridge over the Dnipro as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited the capital, the latest in a run of attacks on Kyiv's river crossings. Merz announced new military and energy aid.
A Russian drone struck Kyiv's Northern Bridge over the Dnipro River on Sunday while German Chancellor Friedrich Merz was in the city on an unannounced visit. Al Jazeera reports the strike damaged the bridge, a road and the hot-water supply in the area, and was the second Kyiv bridge hit that weekend. Another report puts it at the fourth consecutive day of attacks on the city's major crossings, with the Southern Bridge hit five times Thursday and Friday, per HNGN. Casualty reports differ: one account cites Mayor Vitali Klitschko as saying two people were injured, while another says no casualties were reported.
Merz announced about $1.1 billion in military aid and about $394 million for repairing Ukraine's energy sector, according to Al Jazeera. United24 Media gives the figures as 1 billion euros and 350 million euros. He also moved toward a joint production deal for drones and longer-range weapons; Al Jazeera describes systems able to travel more than 600 miles. "If Russia is not stopped, its war machine will sooner or later turn against us," Merz said, per Al Jazeera. Air-raid sirens sounded during the visit.
The repeated bridge strikes have led authorities to restrict traffic on five of the six main Dnipro crossings, causing congestion, according to the report carried by MSNBC TV. HNGN describes the strikes as a shift toward transport infrastructure, away from energy plants and residential areas. The war is in its fifth year.
Notice the pattern: hitting the few crossings and utilities a city depends on can strain daily life far beyond the physical damage, while each foreign visit and aid pledge raises the signal value of every strike.
